College for Texans is an unprecedented statewide initiative and opportunity for AmeriCorps* VISTA volunteers to inform and advise students and their families about the benefits of higher education. The AmeriCorps*VISTA members work with Communities in Schools (CIS) to help students prepare for higher education by providing information about the admissions process and financial aid as well as motivating students to pursue higher education. College for Texans was officially launched November 12-15 2002. The initiative was mandated by Senate Bill 573 of the 77th Texas Legislature and is a key strategy for meeting the participation goal of the state's Closing the Gaps by 2015 plan. Large gaps exist in higher education participation and success by race/ethnicity
