Deep Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supporting arts education in Savannah, Georgia. We are a community of writers who help kids tell stories. We do this by providing 3 types of free, fun, and challenging writing workshops for students enrolled at Savannah Chatham County Public Schools.

The method is simple: we connect dedicated volunteers with Savannah’s youth and provide them with training and curricular support as they teach, inspire, and challenge our young people to compose original poems, stories, and plays. At the conclusion of each 10-week workshop, we publish our students in an anthology-- professionally illustrated, printed and bound.

Volunteer Information:
We are currently accepting applications for writing fellows for the fall of 2012.

Writing Fellows work with a co-teacher to help 12-14 public school students (DeepKids) learn and apply basic literacy skills to produce, polish, and publish their original works of poetry and prose in a professionally printed and bound anthology. Workshops happen once a week, after school, for 10 weeks, from September to December.

Each semester culminates with Deep Speaks!, a public book release and spoken word event where DeepKids get a chance to read their work aloud in front of their parents, peers, and community.

One of the perks enjoyed by Deep's Writing Fellows (besides the privilege of working with our amazing students) is the access to an active, creative, and supportive writing community. Fellows can attend Deep's writers workshop series, where skilled, published authors will cover topics from memoir-writing to poetry or micro-fiction. Writing contests and critique groups are informal elements that are also a part Deep's writing community. Being a Deep Writing Fellow involves nurturing the creative minds of Savannah's future while meeting and sharing ideas with inspired and community-minded citizens today.
